The Shrine Vista is a critical planning control within the Melbourne, Stonnington, and Port Phillip planning schemes, legally protecting the view of the Shrine of Remembrance against a clear sky. This control, which became an Incorporated Document in 2014, ensures no new buildings obstruct the specified "Vista Zone." It primarily affects properties along the Swanston Street and St Kilda Road corridor, where planning applications must be assessed for their visual impact and may require review by the Shrine Trustees and a Licensed Surveyor to ensure compliance.
Reeds Consulting has been central to officially defining this iconic view. In 2014, we were engaged by the state government to conduct the initial survey that defined the vista for its preservation (OP123470). In 2024, we were again engaged by the City of Melbourne to update this survey to GDA2020 for inclusion in the State and Council Digital Twins. This recent update provided a unique opportunity to install a new, permanent plaque at the official viewing point, raising public awareness and commemorating the vista's cultural significance.
